Hey Lucy – where’s Ethel?  Did you know the right partner could make you more successful? Many of you have heard this before, but most of you probably don’t practice this in every part of your life. Doing something on your own seems easier. Nobody is there to drag you down or make you slower or whine and complain. Why get a partner when you can do it on your own?

Do you think Heidi would be so popular without Spencer? Would Jerry the mouse be so interesting without that cat Tom chasing him around all day? What about Laverne and Shirley or Batman and Robin? Alone, all of these characters would have accomplished some things, but with a partner, they became much more successful.

The key is to find the right partner. Not everyone is a great partner. Not everyone is a great partner for you. You have to be selective about finding the right partner. It’s the same thing as finding a husband or wife. The right partner will be with you for a long time, so don’t just choose anybody.

Here’s what the right partner can do for you:

  1. Keep you on track: One of the biggest things a partner provides is encouragement, motivation and support, especially when you start to get off track.
  2. Give good, honest feedback: The great thing about a partner is that they will tell you the truth and speak up when they think you’ve done something wrong so you can improve.
  3. Allow you to look stupid: Everyone makes mistakes. It’s much better to make that mistake with a partner than in front of everyone else. The partner allows you to try stuff and look stupid.
  4. Provide competition: There is some competitiveness in all of us. Having a partner pushes you to compete against them and be better than you are on your own.
  5. Help you: Finally, a partner is there to help you out. You never know when you need another hand around and a partner will be the first one to lend it.

Find a partner to help you meet your goals and get what you want.

The final thing to remember is that there are different partners for different purposes. The same person does not usually fulfill every partnership you need. You should have a partner in each aspect of your life. You need a partner or even several partners at work. One could be a partner in your own group that watches your back and gives you feedback. Another could be a partner on a different team that helps you with what is going on in the rest of the company. Forming many different partnerships at work is important to staying informed and keeping yourself sharp. At home there are many different partners to have as well. There could be a partner for losing weight, one to stay healthy, one to go to pottery class, one to watch your kids with, and one to go shopping with.

Whatever your goals and interests in life, having the right partner will make it easier to accomplish them and increase your life success. If you’re lucky enough to find a great partner, hold on to them and keep them as long as you can.
